Re: Bridge cameras
They're like compacts but with better features like long zoom lenses. They bridge the gap between basic and 'serious' cameras.

What the hell is a bridge camera and why would one want one?
Should I get one for my Mrs' birthday next month?

Re: Bridge cameras
Percy, top three bridge cameras on the market right now are the two Sonys, the RX 10ii and theRX 10iii, plus the Panasonic FZ-1000. All have a 1" sensor, which is four times the size of a standard point&zoom or a phone.

At the other end of the spectrum there are some great deals on old cameras, starting with something like the Canon SX40. I still use an old SX40 instead of some rather more expensive cameras sometimes, even though it has a small sensor; it still takes cracking pictures, as do the later models, the SX50 and the SX60, both if which can shoot in RAW and jpeg. If you don;t want to deal with post process then if you can find a SX40 on e-Bay you can't go wrong.

Panasonic also make some less expensive bridge cameras such as the FZ330, the FZ200 and the FZ72. Some of the Panasonics allow you to shoot in 4K video mode and then extract a still from the video, and also adjust focus AFTER the shot in another 4k mode. If you don't want to spend a lot, but still get a lot, the FZ200 is a great choice.

These are the models I'd be looking at, though both Canon and Nikon do a bunch more, obviously. Remember that the bigger the zoom, the more you will need a tripod sometimes, or in-camera stabilisation at the very least.

Re: Bridge cameras
Yo can mount just about any slr/rangefinder lens on the Sony with the right adaptor. I have a few so thought I might get one one day.

I see the Lumix GH4 is selling cheaply now, probably to be superseded. It's a mirrorless with professional quality video capabilities

Re: Bridge cameras
I have a Sony a7II and am a bit gutted I'll need a huge lense to zoom. So stay clear if you're a nooblet like me.

Re: Bridge cameras
Also have a look at the Lumix FZ300. Amazing lens and features

If I was to fork out on a camera now, it would probably be a Sony mirrorless such as the A7II.

Re: Bridge cameras
I've had the Canon SX60 HD for about a year now and have managed to get some cracking shots. The 60x zoom is incredible considering what you'd have had to pull for that sort of effect 5 years ago.
